When May arrives, nothing stands in the way of pond maintenance in spring. Here we explain how to make your pond fit.Pond maintenance is due in May
Immediately after the Eisheilgen (mostly the last frost days in spring) you should carry out a thorough garden pond maintenance every year. Especially since the middle of May the water temperatures rise again significantly and at the same time the plant growth in the pond begins. And the mostly exotic pond plants that have been removed from the pond for the winter can now be used in the water again without any problems.
Before you start cleaning
You can start cleaning your garden pond for the first time (e.g. remove leaves with a net) in March / April, which means that pond maintenance is reduced by one task in May.
Basically, fish, crayfish and other pond inhabitants can remain in the water during pond maintenance. However, if you want to redesign a lot, you should convert the animals into a “spare pond” in advance, e.g. in several large water containers. You should then fill these water containers with your own pond water, if possible, so that the animals in the replacement pond find approximately the same conditions and the short-term implementation does not become a total stress factor.
How to make your pond fit
1. Cut and divide plants
First of all, it is important to prune old plants or to divide them insofar as they have grown too much in the last year. At the same time, you should also cut off rotten plant remains and, if possible, dispose of them on a compost. This maintenance measure also has the advantage that not too many algae form in the pond. A full spring cut also promotes the growth of aquatic plants and also clearly limits their habitat, so that weaker plants also have a good chance of growth in the garden pond
➤ Divide plants into plant baskets:
If you placed the pond plants in planting baskets when creating the garden pond, you must now remove them and divide them with a spade in the root area.
➤ Share firmly planted pond plants:
Plant maintenance becomes more difficult when the pond plants are firmly rooted in the soil of your natural pond. This type of pond planting is only recommended at low water points. If possible, you should then drain water from the pond again so that you can then also use the spade to easily dig out the plants in the ground.
Alternatively, you can also climb into the pond with special water pants, which can be bought in any fishing shop, and divide the plants directly on site.
2. Insert new pond plants
Ideally, you should also use new pond plants in May. For example, water lilies, water lilies, sea grass and the like. You should always weigh the freshly used plants with enough gravel so that they no longer float and grow better in the pond.
To plant, you can either plant the freshly divided pond plants in pond baskets and put them in the water, or you can buy new pond plants and place them in the garden pond.
Pond plants can often be exchanged with other pond owners in spring. In some cases, special exchanges are even organized for this purpose.
3. Remove algae from the garden pond
Pollutants can also spread in a garden pond, which quickly transforms it into a stinking broth. First and foremost, you have to fight algae, which multiply particularly in spring due to the rise in temperature.
To curb the algae problem, you can use pond snails all year round to combat algae naturally. There are also biological algae killers in specialist shops. Further measures against the algae problem are the use of a mud sucker with which you can thoroughly clean the pond walls.
4. Reinstall water features
After you have taken good care of the plants and animals in your garden pond, you can now use the water features removed over the winter months. These include fountains, pond mist, water lighting and Co.
However, it is important that you try out all of this pond technology again before you use it and, if necessary, wait. Not that it doesn't work anymore and you won't notice it until you've used the technology in the pond.
