The germination capacity of seeds depends primarily on their freshness. It can thus be clearly said that the freshest possible seed has far more germination capacity than old, deposited seed. Fresh seeds guarantee up to 90 percent germination. This capacity decreases significantly per year of storage, so that after about 2 years of storage there is usually only around 30 percent germination capacity.
In order to maintain germination, you must store the seeds correctly. This is the only way to enjoy a rich harvest or bloom. We now explain what this storage should look like.
Seeds should always be stored dry (maximum 25 percent humidity) and cool. The best place for this is therefore the basement. Furthermore, you should not expose the seeds to direct light. Accordingly, it is best to store the seeds in opaque containers. You should not exceed a storage period of up to three years. Otherwise, you can discard the seeds.
If you store the seeds in special germ-proof containers, this ensures that hardly any diseases (e.g. a fungal attack) settle in the seeds.
Test seed germination
If you are not sure how old the seed is, or if you feel that you have stored it incorrectly, then you should not just spread this seed, but do a germ test beforehand. This way you can see whether the seeds are still germinable or whether you can dispose of them.

Sprinkle a little seed on damp kitchen paper. Count the seeds as much as possible. Then place the damp kitchen paper on a plate, slip on a bag (insert a transparent bag for light germs, a dark bag for dark germs) and wait for the regular germination time. Of course, the moisture in the kitchen paper must be retained during the germination period, which is why you have to spray it with water from time to time.
After the germination period is complete, you can remove the bag completely and check the germination capacity of the existing seeds. If the ability to germinate is good (at least 60 percent), you can spread the seed in sufficient numbers. If it is bad, you should discard the seeds.
